I would argue the case for Godard's Breathless, from its hand-held, on-the-fly shooting style and jump cuts to its referential and youthful tone. Even if its genius was partly accidental, the result of abandon and restlessness and feverish Hitchcock and Bogart worship, it's a lasting statement and an essential art film. I seriously believe swaths of films wouldn't exist as they do today had Godard not made it, including and perhaps especially the films of Quentin Tarantino. -- What's your choice for the most influential film ever?
