What car should he get?

It really doesn't matter b/c if any of these cars on the list break down the guy won't be able to afford to fix them. Unless his dad is going to give him the repair money to fix these cars then i would stay away from them b/c at over 100k miles they are going to break down go with something like a honda or toyota that won't break his bank to fix
